Dave Schumacher

Dave's Rare Aquarium Fish

Dave Schumacher has been an avid aquarist from a young age.  Getting his first job at 16 as "the reptile guy" at a local pet store specializing in cichlids, he quickly found he enjoyed the fish even more than the lizards and turtles he had started with.  Dave worked for Armke's Rare Aquarium Fish while in college, which was the go-to source for cichlids in the hobby during the 90s and 2000s.  In 2006, he bought the company, changed the name to Dave's Rare Aquarium Fish, and moved to San Antonio, Texas.  Dave has been a part of the Hill Country Cichlid Club since it was founded in 2004, and has served 2 terms as a board member and secretary of the American Cichlid Association.

Steve Edie

Rift Lake Cichlids

Steve Edie has been keeping fish since the Eisenhower administration. (ref:  Wikipedia) He has kept almost every kind of fish available, and some that weren’t. He now keeps about 1,200 gallons of freshwater aquariums, with a preference toward Rift Lake Cichlids. He has had good success in maintaining many different species and moderate success at breeding them.

He is the past President and Treasurer and current BAP Chair of the Missouri Aquarium Society. He served on the Board of Trustees of the American Cichlid Association, but was paroled after two terms. He has attended every ACA convention since 1996, because he doesn’t know any better.

He once kept a saltwater tank for about a year, but has promised not to do it again.

Rusty Wessel

Central American Cichlids

Rusty maintains over 8000 gallons of freshwater aquariums in a state of the art fish house constructed specifically for fish.  The 90-plus aquariums predominantly contain cichlids and livebearers, which he successfully raises and breeds.

More

Rusty's specialty is Central American fishes. He has successfully collected fish from the countries of Belize, Costa Rica, Cuba, Guatemala, Honduras, Panama, Mexico and Uruguay, and the continent of Africa. If it lives in fresh water, chances are that Rusty has either caught it or been bitten or stung by it. He has been collecting since 1983, and is recognized by other experienced collectors as one of the best. He has made over 150 trips, and has introduced many new species to the aquarium hobby. In 1991, Rusty discovered a beautiful and elusive new cichlid in an area that had already been thoroughly collected. In the June 1996 edition of Tropical Fish Hobbyist magazine, Dr. Robert Rush Miller, emeritus professor of the University of Michigan, described and named this species Theraps wesseli. (In the recent Rican reorganization, it is called Choritheros wesseli.)

Rusty is also a prolific author and photographer, as his writings and photographs have appeared in a large number of specialized publications, such as Aquarium Fish MagazineAquarist and PondkeeperBuntbarsche BulletinCichlid News, Ad Konings' Cichlids YearbooksFreshwater and Marine Aquarium and Tropical Fish Hobbyist.

In the organized hobby, Rusty is currently the "Back Issue Sales Person" for the American Cichlid Association and a speaker participant for the ACA/Zoo Med Speaker's Program. He is past chair of the ACA board of trustees (1990) and chaired the 1992 and 2014 conventions. In addition, he is an active solicitor for the "Guy Jordan Endowment Fund", set up by the ACA to fund cichlid research. Rusty has been awarded with the greatest honor the American Cichlid Association gives to its distinguished members, the ACA fellowship in 1997. On the local level, he is currently treasurer for the Louisville Tropical Fish Fanciers.

Rusty has lectured and judged numerous fish shows throughout the United States, including the annual "Florida Tropical Fish Farmers" show and several ACA conventions.

I love to travel with fish friends to see cichlids in their native waters.  I am certainly proof that you do not have to be a diver or a photographer to enjoy chasing cichlids.  Over the years I have become a better swimmer (ha ha!) and with the help of a GoPro I have lots of great video.  It is really fun and such a joy to see fish in the wild that you have kept in your own aquarium(s).  There is no doubt that being able to observe fish in their natural habitat has made me a better fish keeper.

I am an Honorary Life Member of the Sacramento Aquarium Society, Pacific Coast Cichlid Association and the American Cichlid Association.  I like to write about my fish experiences and have been published in the Buntbarsche Bulletin, Cichlidae Communique, Cichlid News and aquarium societies from Australia to Sweden.  I have received numerous writing awards from the ACA and FAAS, including “Best Continuing Column” and “Author of the Year.”  I am honored to be named a “Fellow” of the American Cichlid Association and the Cichlid Room Companion.

I am a founding member of “Babes In The Cichlid Hobby” where we try to make a difference in cichlid keeping, by raising money (Over $150,000.00 to date) for Cichlid Conservation and Cichlid Research.

Along with my husband Gary, we have about 150 tanks in our fish house, filled with cichlids from Lake Tanganyika and Lake Malawi.

Babes In The Cichlid Hobby

I have been a tropical fish enthusiast for years and cichlids are my passion. The organized hobby has been a big part of my fish keeping life and I enjoy the social aspect it offers.  It has given me the opportunity to find the fish I desire, and to learn more about them. Over the years I have made lifelong fish friends and they have enriched my hobby even more.
